Core Drive+ Configuration

Core Drive+ Configuration

Warning
Knowledge of VSD compressor regulation methods, experience working with compressor control systems and basic principle knowledge of compressed air systems is required to be able to successfully install and commission a Metacentre Core Drive+ product.
Using this page you set up a Metacentre Core Drive+
The Configuration Wizard will automatically take you through all Drive+ devices in the installation, allowing to configure these one by one.
On the top of the page you are informed about the Address and the Name of the compressor asset.

The first step involves the Metacentre Core asking the current configuration data of the Drive+ device.
The Drive+ device will respond and will send the requested data to the Metacentre Core.
The communication is taking place using the Airbus485 serial network.

During this process, a progress bar is displayed and the retrieved information is gradually displayed.

If the Metacentre Core is unable to receive the requested data, an according error screen is displayed.

Once all data is gathered, the page is filled in with the current configuration data of the Drive+ device. Resembling:

Compressor Pressure Set Points
First assure the Pressure set points on the Compressor are set correctly on the Compressor interface itself:

Warning
Establishing the correct compressor pressure set points is critical to successful operation
Compressor Unload pressure
The pressure at which the compressor will stop/offload.
On fully integrated VSD compressor controller: value may be represented as “Controlled Stop Pressure” level.
Compressor Target pressure:
The pressure the variable speed drive is set to maintain.
On fully integrated VSD compressor controller: value is generally the same as the "Load Pressure" set point.
Compressor Load pressure:
The pressure at which the compressor will start/load.
On fully integrated VSD compressor controller: value may be represented as “Target Pressure” level.

Compressor set points, not fully integrated VSD:

Compressor set points, fully integrated VSD (typical):

Maximum Delivery pressure,
Maximum Internal pressure (if used):
The “Excess” or “High Pressure Alarm” safety level.
On fully integrated VSD compressor controller this value may be represented as “Immediate Stop Pressure” level.

Metacentre Core Drive+ Set Points
Next set the parameters on the Metacentre Core interface:

Pressure Set Points

Unload pressure:
Set to Compressor’s “Unload” or “Controlled Stop” pressure set point value.
Target pressure:
Set to the "Target" pressure value established for the Compressor.
Load pressure:
Set to Compressor’s “Load” or “Target” pressure set point.

Metacentre Core Drive+ set points, not fully integrated VSD

Metacentre Core Drive+ set points, fully integrated VSD (typical)

Pressure averaging:
Pressure corrections by the control system are averaged to prevent abrupt changes and enable smooth and controlled pressure adjustments. The Metacenter Core unit updates pressure information approximately every two seconds. The ‘Pressure Averaging Factor’ is the number of previous pressure corrections that are used for averaging. For example: a factor of ‘2’ will average the most recent pressure correction value received with the previous two values received.
If system volume is large and/or pressure variations are slow a higher ‘Pressure Averaging Factor’ can be used to dampen response and smooth control pressure changes. If system volume is small and/or pressure variations are fast a lower ‘Pressure Averaging Factor’ should be used to enable a faster response. In some instances, pressure differential across air treatment and/or small diameter pipework can result in sudden and abrupt changes in detected pressure.
A higher ‘Pressure Averaging Factor’ can be used to dampen this effect.
Delivery pressure max:
Internal pressure max (if used):
Set equal to Compressor’s Maximum delivery pressure and Maximum internal pressure.

Delivery Pressure Sensor
... or in case of a voltage based sensor:
Under “Sensor type” select the type of sensor applied for the Delivery Pressure via the drop down options.

Under Range:
Fill in the range of the sensor.
Warning
If the sensor has been calibrated, these values might be slightly different from the expected values (for instance 15.8 Bar instead of 16.0 Bar). DO NOT adapt these as this will jeopardize the calibration.
Generation Pressure Sensor

Use the checkbox to indicate if a Generation Pressure Sensor is used or not:
For the remainder, refer to above, “Delivery Pressure Sensor”

VSD frequency monitoring
In a Variable Compressor, the amount of air flow (Capacity) provided is proportional to the speed the motor is running.
The speed of the motor is controlled by the VSD (Variable Speed Drive) device.

The VSD controls the speed of the motor by adapting the frequency of the electric power supplied to the motor.
On its input, the VSD receives electrical power at 50Hz or 60Hz, on its output this frequency can vary between a minimum and a maximum value.
The Drive+ device measures the frequency the motor is powered with. As such, it also knows the speed the motor is running at.
In order to be able to deduct Power consumption and Capacity, the Drive+ needs to know the minimum and maximum frequency the VSD can output.
These numbers need to be filled in in this box (Min speed frequency = Fmin; Max speed frequency = Fmax)
